Is empathy now to be understood as taking on other ppl's feelings & losing all judgement rather than understanding them & retaining it?

Paul Bloom argued we should replace empathy with rational compassion http://meaningoflife.tv/videos/37456?in=06:23&out=12:52 …

He'd say I'm talking abt cognitive empathy. Fine. But dividing this word makes it hard to use & there's not a replacement.

Also it doesn't quite work. I can try to feel what others feel emotionally & still decide that compassion is not the right response

There's a lot in this. Though I think Bloom is mostly referring to removing empathy when it comes to moral decision making.

In the same way, we might also say we should remove anger when making a moral decision.

That only works if you're defining empathy as an emotion. If you're seeing it as understanding other ppl's feelings, no.

Then its more like removing understanding of other factors which influence moral decisions. eg the economy.
