In fact, someone might admire Y because he thinks Y consistently makes good points or he might disagree with Y on almost everything else.

I see this most with Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris - people being told their views are invalidated by the fact they cited either 1 of them.

Mostly I object to ppl assigning a whole collection of values to ppl based on one thing they said. These ppl are usually tribal themselves.

I used to be part of a moral community who did this & got sick of an expectation to approve & disapprove specific sets of ppl & ideas.

It took a while tho. I feel the tribal impulse. I like belonging somewhere and things being simple.
