I think we shld absolutely not tolerate punishing or dogpiling ppl for views but be careful that criticism of ideas is not conflated w/ this

I won't accept being told that I am shaming anyone if I say I think religious, far-right or far-left ideas are terrible ideas. Deal with it.
-
I can say this civilly & go away if my opinion not wanted. I can even respect & like a person with a terrible idea but I will say it is one

Maybe people don't want to admit they've supported Trump bc they're embarrassed and should be!
@HPluckrose@DeityFree@AsraNomani -
I do wonder if ppl sometimes use 'shamed' because they're already ashamed &don't want to confront this
-
It's not much more different than the
#HonorBrigade that shames ex-Muslims: snear to silence.@HPluckrose@MaryamNamazie@DeityFree -
I think its very different. We must be able to criticise religious & political values.
-
If ppl are not ashamed of their political/religious beliefs, they cannot be shamed by this. 1/2
-
They could be harassed, bullied, punished for their views & we must oppose this. Not criticism. 2/2
-
Asra, we should stay silent&allow racist, sexist,xenophobic, homophobic,rhetoric to be normalized?

Assuming you know what a person's values are based on their vote is silly. Even worse, throwing racist/sexist/bigot at them.
-
Analogous to insisting all HRC voters did it in support of demeaning victims of sexual assault & leaving people to die in Libya.
-
People can be very uncharitable, yes. The decision to vote for either can be criticised tho without accusations of shaming.
-
When one hears daily that one's choice in an election is indicative of racism/sexism/bigotry, hiding seems a reasonable reaction
-
I'm not saying everyone should argue their case. I do but I don't mind conflict. Am called racist/sexist/bigoted daily.
-
Being called names as a response to one's express views is one thing. Being called it without/before being heard is another.
-
This is a different point, I think. I am not advocating calling anyone names.
-
I can assure you that every Trump supporter w/leftist friends has heard them talk of "trump voters" as some X-ist monolith.

I agree. Sometimes it's right to feel ashamed. You feel that way because you know what you have done is shameful.
@AsraNomani -
But importantly, this does not make you a bad person, just someone who made a bad choice. We all do that sometimes.
@AsraNomani -
But we own our choices, good or bad, and rightly feel proud when they are good and ashamed when they are bad.
@AsraNomani -
If we are happy to accept approval for good choices (and we all are) we must equally expect disapproval for bad.
