Backhanded compliments & sly digs intended to undermine confidence but concealed in a way that it would seem oversensitive to object to.

Its been advocated as a nasty dating strategy in order to get a woman w low self-esteem to devalue herself enough to be grateful 4 attention
-
But more generally as a way to undermine confidence? Is it something men do to women particularly?
-
enough that I know it can't be coincidence. They also both do it to many, many people, not just to me.

.
@sophiehannahCB1 Sly digs are meant to hurt, to undermine confidence, to manipulate. And I don't think men are primary culprits here. -

I'd say so - in the sense that I don't think it would work on (most) guys.
-
I think women do it to women mostly & when they are critical of men's appearances, its usually direct & aimed at correction!
-
Negging is intended to be playful though, not actual criticism and not to make anyone feel bad.

i could write books on women comments which would be called negging if a man had said it.
-
"Your personality makes you much more attractive than you are at first look", "you're graceful for being so overweight"
-
May I retweet this as an example?
-

It isn't some new form of pegging, is it? I'm not risking a google search on this.

Scroll down! Its a series!

Well, it's still nasty. It's part of human interaction though, but weird to introduce competition tactics to dating, seems like
-
the type of approach a sociopath would consider "clever".
