that seems to only cover things that are overt. For example, people keep giving him benefit of doubt and possible vague meanings

Yes. Things which are overt can be called. Things which aren't cannot. Ppl can only be judged on what they actually say.

If someone who is a known racist/sexist w/e who has been called out before for smthing overt says smthing vague, not convincing

Not suggesting it is. Still need to address what ppl actually say rather than our perception of their motivations.

as long as they can plausibly deny, that mentality allows them to continue winking in safety. Not saying everyone does this.

If an accusation can be plausibly denied based on what was actually said, we shld not try to mind-read & claim to know better.

not claiming it's always best to assume, but maybe not best to give a free pass. In this case, for an argument, ask for reason

if they didn't mean it, they will have a different reason. Some people that do mean it will have an "excuse" sometimes though.

Yes. I'm actually racist but criticise Islam as an excuse. I'm actually a misogynist but use criticism of feminism as an excuse.

In fact, if u look honestly at everything I have said &done & advocated, you'll see what my motivations are. No mind-reading needed

My point is that ppl (by which I mean *my* ppl - liberals) need to be charitable & not mind-read according to agendas.

the problem is people like Rubin who give clearly wrong people a platform and just let them get away with saying anything.Argue!
