I'd prefer not to teach them that violence is an acceptable way of approaching *any* problem.

I agree but I don't think that works for the same reason. Confining ppl to their rooms & taking their stuff is not acceptable either

No. That's exactly it. We treat children differently to the way we treat adults because they can't set their own boundaries yet.
