Is it that we are advocating roughly the same thing but I describe this as a principle & you as abandoning them?

In a terrific twist of fate, I just read this piece--captures my position almost exactly. http://buff.ly/2epQk2o

A society based on classical liberalism does not entail anyone having to agree w classical liberalism! XD

In this sense, ppl wld be agreeing coz it works for everyone even tho the principles they live by might be different.

"Works for everyone" = pragmatic but you'd still have to have principles of equality & freedom to make the aim "for everyone"

Perhaps all that must be accepted is the fact of pluralism, of variance in our own & others tastes, preferences, behaviors, etc.

I think all societies have recognised this as a fact. They just vary on the extent to which they allow it.

But does experience not suggest that secular liberalism tends to work better than oppression, that it's a good benchmark?

Work in what sense? I argue for it cos I think it gives more ppl more rights & freedoms. Don't know if it will survive.

"Works" in the sense of innovating more effective ways of NOT killing each other, of leveraging our cooperative capacities.

With others who agree, yes. Still vulnerable to those who don't.

Id go as far as to say this would work best if we cld make it work but it wld require overcoming deep tribal moralistic traits

I think its the way forward that is best for all of us but that I'm not sure I trust my species to take it.

I waver on this. Steven Pinker encourages me but Jonathan Haidt showed how small & new WEIRD societies are. Stats not good.

So ultimately I come down to *arguing* for tolerance, equality, cooperation as a principle which would also work if we let it.
