A religion should have enough confidence in its validity that it should be able to take mockery with good humour.

.@sjzara I don't think so.If a religion were true,it would be essential that everyone took it very seriously. Consequences for not are awful

.@sjzara Someone who really thinks their religion is true & hell is real & has any compassion for others can only be horrified by blasphemy.

.@sjzara Someone amused by others mocking his religion, either finds eternal torture of blasphemers amusing or doesn't believe his religion.

.@sjzara This is why religions with Hell beliefs are so dangerous. True believers in this do awful things to protect others from it.

We cannot address problem of religion unless we accept believers really believe what they say they believe &the logical consequences of that

We need to think "If what eg Christians believe were actually true, what would I do?" And then fully recognise that many think it is.

If not believing a certain thing really did result in being tortured for eternity, what good parent wld not try to ensure their child did?

I don't say this to defend or excuse indoctrination or oppression on the grounds of religion but to show that faith is the problem.

I recognise that many relig ppl, particularly most Western Christians, embrace fuzzy versions of faith compatible with tolerance & freedom.

Their Christianity is a cultural identification accompanied by vaguely comforting beliefs in ultimate justice, immortality & purpose.

The claim that literal interpretations of faith are only accepted by radical extremists & anti-theists is fairly accurate.

But this does not change the nature of faith or the fact that faith is the problem.

Believing in things w/out evidence can result in anything from killing apostates to homeopathy. "But it can be comforting!" isn't an answer.

We have psychological needs that religion answers but this doesn't mean that its the right answer.

Systematically shutting down all escape routes from reality, categorising forms of denial. I still detect the mathematician. XD
