If not believing a certain thing really did result in being tortured for eternity, what good parent wld not try to ensure their child did?

I don't say this to defend or excuse indoctrination or oppression on the grounds of religion but to show that faith is the problem.

I recognise that many relig ppl, particularly most Western Christians, embrace fuzzy versions of faith compatible with tolerance & freedom.

Their Christianity is a cultural identification accompanied by vaguely comforting beliefs in ultimate justice, immortality & purpose.

The claim that literal interpretations of faith are only accepted by radical extremists & anti-theists is fairly accurate.

But this does not change the nature of faith or the fact that faith is the problem.

Believing in things w/out evidence can result in anything from killing apostates to homeopathy. "But it can be comforting!" isn't an answer.

We have psychological needs that religion answers but this doesn't mean that its the right answer.
