What is better? Unprincipled pragmatism or impractical idealism?

Depends on their underlying values I think. An unprincipled, pragmatic psychopath would be very dangerous for instance.

Yes, I think its clear we need both and am confused when ppl speak of getting rid of one. That just can't work.

My only problem with pragmatism is when it conflicts with the seeking and propagation of truth ftr.

It would be. :-p This concerns & irritates me too but a disregard for human rights, equality & freedom bother me more.

They both concern me for sure. I'm now sure how I'd personally contrast the two but I think we can avoid both.

Is it true? Is it ethical?Accommodating error for practical reasons is annoying. Accommodating human rights abuses is abhorrent

eg "Pretend religion is compatible with science so religious people don't oppose science" = unprincipled and annoying.

Yeah, and if you want a good example of the problems with pragmatism, you can look to Glenn Greenwald.

It leads to this ends-justify-the-means behavior where all self-correction and honesty are totally lost. Only narrative matters.

I view that as a form of incompetence, like all dishonesty. Eye of the beholder I suppose. I choose pragmatism.

But thats probably because its hard for me to divorce my own principles that I *think* I can reach pragmatically.

Yeah there's some scope to its definition but when it values effect over truth it's at least potentially a problem.
