I feel sad when I see ppl never coming out as gay/lesbian or pretending to be religious for fear of hurting/worrying loved ones.

But how do you argue with "my mother will be devastated & terrified that I'm going to hell. Easier just to keep my mouth shut."
-
Of course it's up to the individual, but you can't pretend to be something you're not just to spare a loved one's feelings.
-
I think so too but I worry my individualism verges on selfishness.
-
Shld someone not emigrate cos it'd make their parents sad? Shld they not end a suffering life coz others will be hurt?
-
Should they not leave an unsatisfying marriage if spouse will be heartbroken? Shld they put adult kids needs first?
-
I am so unqualified to answer. I'm sorry.

Maybe duty you people you love is a choice you make, rather than something someone has forced on you.
-
Both are choice. I'm wondering when it becomes selfish to go for the first option.
