Many of the jobs I'm looking at in academic publishing ask for people with French. Also, many important manuscripts in France.

Don't the British just speak English, assuming that everyone else does? And the French then pretend to not understand?

I'm very reluctant to do that, yes! Unreasonable expectation. Shouting in English is the correct way to talk to a French person.

Obv, sometimes a publishers might have to communicate w a Frenchie in writing but then you just use large font.No need to go mad

Since you seem to understand the basics of grammar, you should start reading classics (with a dictionary in a tab).
