The child has taken to making observations of gender differences among her classmates. It seems to be endlessly fascinating to her.
I actually want to look into gender differences re: kindness that she observes in her fellow 12 yr olds. Rings true to me.

-
She says that girls are kinder to their friends than boys but boys are kinder to their enemies! Sort of. Not quite. 1/2
-
Girls more likely to be sympathetic & talk & hug when a friend is upset. But girls can also go much further in being unkind.
-
Says boys will be annoying to girls generally & constantly (they're 12!) but they'll stop if a girl gets visibly upset.Arguing girls less so
-
Girls more likely to carry on picking on another girl even if she gets very upset than boys, in her observation. "Boys stop if they cry."
-
But boys who are upset are more likely to go to female friends for sympathy. I find this very interesting.

what specifically?
-
.
@CathyYoung63 Boys less thoughtful & sympathetic in normal convo but also less willing to be deliberately & sustainedly hurtful. -
Hypothesis: girls, lacking as much physical strength, cultivate alternative means of enforcing their will.
-
Much reason to think women are more focused on the verbal & psychological on average.

Have to be careful with perceptions. Maybe more to do with societal pressures that state boys shouldn't show much emotion.
-
That's the received wisdom isn't it? Societal pressures explain differences in interactions. I think this can be questioned a bit
-
Likely not all societal. Maybe some true gender differences. I see the boys put arguments behind them more quickly than girls.
-
Yes. Did you see the article that I just retweeted?
-
Just read it now. Interesting and confirms what I believe to be true but wonder about studying friendly competition.

Boys affection for their male friends often manifests as ribbing or piss taking. Doesn't mean less kind when not in public
-
.
@Si_Copath I don't think one sex is more kind than the other. I think it might manifest in different ways for more than social reasons.
