I have argued with ppl who say that. Fundamentalist mentality is highly moral but the morality is twisted.
It didn't matter coz if she innocent, she'd rewarded in heaven for protesting it. Go to Hell if she confessed falsely

She didn't confess & author believed her innocent coz she suddenly stopped reacting to pain - God's mercy.
-
But in this, she was a saint, torturers just doing their job, man who confessed under torture weak hell-bound sinner

Yeah, if literally eternal hellfire existed and I knew it. I'd do almost anything to safeguard my loved ones.
-
Me too! Kill ppl who cld endanger them. Church's job was to protect whole flock. Many took this very seriously.

So many ppl don't get this. Don't realise other people truly believe & see it thru to logical conclusion.

Never inspired to hurt anyone - child - but the horror of what would happen to non-believers overwhelming.

Well to be fair, the ethics get even deeper with heaven existing too. Killing people b4 they're saved for instance...
-
Would basically entail sending them to hell when you could potentially save them instead.
