Still the case now. Most of the 'Christians' I know have a vague sense of a good god & heaven & a cultural ID. They focus most on life.https://twitter.com/addamschloe/status/783219897761402880 …

I always thought the same was true about ancient Greece, Rome or Egypt, affecting people culturally more than philosophically.
-
I'm sure that's true tho I don't know much about it. Most people aren't philosophers. Practical realists.
-
True. Also, I guess most people were gullible superstitious ignoramuses that simply followed some mainstream traditional beliefs?
-
Most ppl don't give this stuff serious thought but maybe coz just not that important rather than unthinking acceptance?
-
Dunno. I struggle to imagine the life of a European commoner. When it came to it, were they sure of beliefs or just went along?
-
Often they didn't even know that much abt what they were meant to believe. Ritual, rote answers, songs, plays.

Mostly, the Church didn't want the commoners thinking too deeply about it. Accept the basics we teach. Don't ask hard questions.
-
And should you ask difficult questions, we will answer, and you'll be obliged to accept that answer. Unquestioningly.
-
Under no circumstances will we enter into playing the child's game of "Why, mommy?" :)
