Its true that there seem to have been little argument against the existence of gods until the late 16th century but this misses the point.

'Practical atheists' existed throughout the medieval period. People who lived as tho the God idea was of little or no relevance to them.

Not claiming they consciously doubted. Sure some did but very many ppl seem to have simply focused on stuff in the real world exclusively.

And this necessarily influenced how central they wanted it to be to their society, rights & freedoms. Not a case of Christians vs atheists.
