Its true that there seem to have been little argument against the existence of gods until the late 16th century but this misses the point.

Not claiming they consciously doubted. Sure some did but very many ppl seem to have simply focused on stuff in the real world exclusively.

We know abt them, not coz they wrote things advocating this, but coz so much was written abt why ppl need to stop doing this & think abt God

So so much abt worldliness & the flesh vs the spirit. In confession & sermons. "Pay attention to religion!" Suggests v common not to.

This is why ppl saying 'Christians' brought abt secularism completely miss the point.Always huge differences in how central relig was to ppl

And this necessarily influenced how central they wanted it to be to their society, rights & freedoms. Not a case of Christians vs atheists.
