'Practical atheists' existed throughout the medieval period. People who lived as tho the God idea was of little or no relevance to them.

Not claiming they consciously doubted. Sure some did but very many ppl seem to have simply focused on stuff in the real world exclusively.
-
We know abt them, not coz they wrote things advocating this, but coz so much was written abt why ppl need to stop doing this & think abt God
-
So so much abt worldliness & the flesh vs the spirit. In confession & sermons. "Pay attention to religion!" Suggests v common not to.
-
This is why ppl saying 'Christians' brought abt secularism completely miss the point.Always huge differences in how central relig was to ppl
-
And this necessarily influenced how central they wanted it to be to their society, rights & freedoms. Not a case of Christians vs atheists.

Sorry, butted in without looking at thread
-
No worries. All abt whether secularism relies on philosophical atheism or whether simple low prioritising of religion will account
-
Am pointing out that ppl for whom religion was not central have always existed even when no evidence of atheism being argued for.
-
Lucretius De Natura Rerum startling, superb example
