Ethical dilemma! Whether or not to give a child a placebo when you know it cld well work but also want her to be alert to pseudoscience?

I'd do it, on grounds that if placebo works then it's something that really works, therefore scientific, IYSWIM.

Yes but if I say to her 'this homeopathic (or something) remedy will help you sleep' might she be susceptible to it later?

I can tell her later that it was a placebo but she might be so sure it worked that she wouldn't believe me!

But that's fine - she shouldn't believe you - she should try everything for herself and see what works and what doesn't - that's

Give her placebo, then later explain placebo to her. Science says placebo works, but only with some things and on some ppl.

Agree with others. Offer it now & explain afterwards that it was her own mind that "worked", so develop the power of the mind...

The placebo effect can work even when the patient fully understands they are taking a placebo.

if you offer her something with the words "Here, take this, it is perfectly harmless but will help you sleep" what would she do?

Placebo is surely no pseudoscience. It's well documented. A lot of explaining left though. Maybe she cracks the mystery one day.
