We had a go at poor Apu in our paper, "The Joke's On You" where we accused the Simpsons of being disparagement humour rather than satire in his case because of the power dynamics.https://twitter.com/ConceptualJames/status/1056309141801709568 …

Here is the relevant bit. I also included the bit where Applebaum says one can disagree with Social Justice scholarship in the form of asking questions & seeking to understand but not in the form of disagreeing with it (framed as 'denial). All critique is invalid.pic.twitter.com/uomr2KUyZf

Note this claim, especially, “the mere fact that they can question the existence of systemic oppression is a function of their privilege to choose to ignore discussions of systemic oppression or not” (45). The epitome of a Kafka trap. There is no legitimate way to disagree.

I’m from India and I will miss APu. He is a devoted husband, father , doctorate, proud Hindu successful business owner and very kind. I know many who fit this stereotype . If that is how we are mocked, I say more of it.

Some stereotypes are ugly & hateful."You people are dirty, barbaric, criminal, stupid" & this is disparagement/superiority & ignorant & contemptible. Others are teasing & affectionate & to be played with. Indian British humour includes quite a lot of this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkN9VdjgDwM …

I also love the part about how social justice scholarship can never be “dominant” because it’s fighting AGAINST dominance! It’s like “You can’t say our Pizza is the worst tasting Pizza ever! Our name is ‘Joe’s Best Pizza’, so it must be the best!” Genius. @ConceptualJames

“Questioning our oppression is proof we’re oppressed.” Completely unfalsifiable, makes it more akin to conspiracy theories and religions than scholarship.

The Kafka Trap is like the intellectual equivalent of the unfalsifiable hypothesis. There can be no possible argument against it so people will assume it's true, when in reality it proves nothing (if falsification is impossible, then so is verification).

Also misuses the word "systemic". Anything systemic cannot be subsequently blamed on or attributed to individuals. That is the logical contradiction here which springs the trap.
