Yeah. Toxic masculinity & femininity can be understood as a display of the worst traits that are significantly higher in one sex than the other. Violence + highly competitive braggadocio in men, psychological/verbal manipulation + whining hypoagency in women. However...https://twitter.com/ConceptualJames/status/1056206638527537152 …

Interestingly, I think both of these terms are somewhat ill-conceived from a linguistic perspective but probably describe real phenomena accurately. The issue, primarily, seems to have been poor application in practice, rather like rampant misuse of antibiotics. https://twitter.com/zxq9_notits/status/1056205220391268352 …

...I still think it is better not to call them that because it is so often understood to mean that masculinity or femininity is toxic or that these horrible behaviours are part of being masculine or feminine. Better to say a cluster of nasty behaviours more common to one sex.

I think the human tendency to pair a negative with an unalterable trait and then take it out on people socially is too great. So people should avoid combining a word like "toxic" with anything about a person that they can't reasonably change.

The issue I had with that piece in Medium is that the examples of "toxic femininity" read like a checklist for borderline personality disorder, a diagnosis given to women more than men, but you're talking about behavior outside normal parameters, not a cultural phenomenon.
