Stephen Messenger certainly knows his moral foundations but I have always found his thesis that conservative morality is objectively superior because it draws on all moral foundations while liberals draw much more strongly on half somewhat akin to the naturalistic fallacy.https://twitter.com/AreoMagazine/status/1055897417839718401 …

Stephen Messenger, @TheWhig, also finds much to admire, but he sees a neglected elephant in the room & presents an argument for a fuller application of Moral Foundations to its thesis. The value of Moral Foundations theory, I have always thought, is that it enables an understanding of the moral intuitions of those on the other side of the divide and makes them harder to misunderstand as evil and provides assistance with making arguments that will convince.

When it comes to those intuitions themselves tho, there are arguments to be made in favour of prioritising some over others, which ones & why. It is not a given that giving them all equal value is the way to maximise the best aspects of human morality in 21st century environments

it could well be that the prioritising of care & reduction of harm foundation is actually more valuable than the sanctity/disgust foundation which seeks to avoid or ban things seen as disgusting even if that was very useful in preventing us from poisoning ourselves historically.

I agree about arguments to be made for diffferemt prioritizations. But the argument is between the three-foundation moral matrix and the all-foundation moral matrix because those are the two configurations that exist in the real world.

And the test between those two Moral matrices is the track record of each in the real world. Haidt chimes in on that too, saying the three-foundation matrix - aka the unconstrained vision - “has the worst track record in the history of ideas.” http://ccare.stanford.edu/videos/meng-wu-lecture-jonathan-haidt/ …pic.twitter.com/Q5gl1JAF6q

The test can’t be any sort of abstract rationalization of any particular made up weighting system.

It's not a static weighting. It changes depending on the situation. If I see a child getting beaten by his father, I'm not thinking about the primacy of authority. If my friend is murdering people, I'm not thinking about the primacy of loyalty.

I think maybe a broader point is that the left sees their 'unused' moral foundations as descriptive of evil deeds, and sees its own 'used' moral foundations as defensive mechanisms against them. But none of the foundations need be seen as defensive or offensive.

The thing is, there are always going to be people who emphasise "care, sympathy, compassion" over loyalty (hence welcoming ISIS returners back to the UK with red carpets, butterfly showers, unicorns and rainbows (oh and free council houses too!), instead of a hail of bullets.

Also, 'individual autonomy' without purity means very little. Paedophiles and rapists and eugenicists are exercising their individual autonomy, but they lack purity.
