I believe in individual freedom, not giving some people the freedom to deny freedom to other people. That includes limiting the rights people have over their children's bodies and beliefs.

My reasoning is personally that it impedes on the right to self-determination of children by giving them a Christian or Muslim or Hindu-bias of the world through education. A lot of kids come out of these schools - unsurprisingly - religious. I don't think that was their choice

In that case we can go as far as to say that the school system impedes children’s rights to self determination given that they are forced into rote memorization of facts they could care less about and are not taught to critically think. See Unschooling as an alternative.

I think the critical difference is that we know education is better for them. So even if they don't want it, they should get it. We don't know any particular religion is necessarily better for them. That should be up to them to figure out.
