It was generally uncharitable, yes, but we expected this. I think you are more upset about it than we are because you didn't expect it of VBW. And also know us and our motivations, obviously.
You called it a practical joke and said we were gleefully attacking *people* and it sounded as tho you said we had opposing views on gender equality. If you don't think any of that & accept that we had good motivations, we can disagree on whether this will help or be ethical.

I said that I don’t like the delight in deceiving people to make a point.
-
And I think that is uncharitable. We were not delighted to have deceived people. We were delighted to have a paper accepted and amused by the mad comments.
-
Fair enough, you are right that I cannot with any authority say that you took delight in deceiving. That is uncharitable and I apologize.
-
Gladly accepted. I hope we will have more productive conversations in the future.
-
Likewise, Helen. Have a good evening and thanks for the discussion.

podcast interview?!
-
Please, no. That previous interview was already so bad that I couldn't listen to the end. There are many more worthwhile things for them to spend their time on.https://twitter.com/lakens/status/880021938575376384 …

This thread gives me the impression that a discussion with Helen would be a more fruitful and interesting discussion to listen to.

But the concern that my points were seen as ad hominem is what made me want to clarify. I even apologized if it came across that way.
-
I accept that apology and hope you are a bit more inclined to see us as people with good intentions who care about knowledge and equality issues. I can accept that you think we should have stuck to straightforward criticism but disagree.

And I clarified (and thought you accepted the clarification) that the gender equality example was completely misinterpreted.
-
And I accepted it again above.
-
Yup- I don’t endorse any of those things, and agree that you are the only authority as to something like “delight”.

I think I replaced "delight" with "glee," ftr. Here's the quote: "it leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth that they do this with such delight and that they've spent this much time to try and take down people." - Peez
-
It's very hard to address the tone of that whole segment without justifiable criticisms of the same mindreading which I have objected being done to us, but yes, it did seem hostile to us & to assume our motivation was spite against people rather than continuation of sincere work
-
Well, unfortunately i can only appeal to my clarifications here. Our joking tone may be the culprit. But i do hope that our interaction at least undid some of what you felt. FWIW i found you to be a fair discussing here, and i appreciate that.
-
Fwiw, I was disappointed and a bit pissed when I initially heard the podcast and my response may have been a bit hyperbolic. I do think you were unfair with them though. I appreciate your in depth discussion here.
-
Thanks, Kevin.

I never called it a practical joke- that was an analogy about my ethical standards perhaps being overly stringent.
