It's more like shooting fish in a barrel than punching down.

You'd think so but the contortions to deny there is a problem of any kind are astounding.
-
Yeah, I can't count the amount of times I've seen people appeal to academic scholarship to defend absolutely ridiculous narratives coming out of these fields. And now when that's exposed specifically, people claim it's "punching down." Come on. Give me a break.
-
You’d think they’d want high standards and the prestige that comes with higher learning...er...wait...check that, judging by their concepts, maybe weakness is the point

Punching down implies the people in these fields of study are powerless, maligned, or inferior. Hahaha!

I find it a bit disappointing to hear the
@verybadwizards present these as though they were valid criticisms:@peez: “It leaves a bad taste in my mouth.”@tamler: “If you don’t think [this field] has value, then why have you spent the last five years obsessing over it?” -
Really? Uggh. That’s a bummer. I really like those guys. Not anti-intersectional but honest & real truth searchers usually. Do they say anything nice about Helen & James?
-
I like them too. To be fair to them, it’s clear that they tried to be balanced — just not very hard. I get the impression that this is one of several topics about which they have difficulty being impartial.
@paulbloomatyale added welcome balance to the conversation. -
I think they had James on briefly after the conceptual penis.

If there was a subset of right-wing academic studies espousing anti-science rhetoric and publishing young earth/creationist theories as supposedly rigorous science, which then went on to influence public discourse and broader culture, would they still regard expose as bad faith?
-
There has been a concerted effort to push creationism and intelligent design as a scientific alternative to evolution. I wonder how many would rally to defend these as "alternative ways of knowing"?

'Punching down' is such a bloody weird term. As if being abhorrent* is acceptable if the victims are the 'evil oppressors'. *Obviously I don't think your grievance studies hoax was abhorrent. It was fantastic, timely, and much needed.
