Helen, their criticisms are no worse than some of the more mild criticisms you've already received. The feedback James was quoting makes it out to be some off-the-hook personal attack. It is not this and I'm sure you can make up your own mind. Listen to it, or don't, but please..

Of course you were! I'm sure I would have been too. But I think publishing those videos opened you up - rightly or wrongly - to these accusations of smugness etc, and I think they get in the way of communicating what I believe is a very important message.
-
You can only go so far in preempting bad faith attacks. Any honest person who takes the time to read the Areo piece will see the portrayal of them on VBW as bad faith imo. The video may appeal to more people who aren't Extremely Online and who are totally new to the issue.
-
If the message actually reaches and persuades (even a bit) more people, especially policy-makers, because of the video, then I am definitely wrong about the video. Until then, I fear it is a distraction.
-
It is reaching more people. My husband, daughter & friends said it was the first time they understood what I was doing. They can't get their heads around the Areo piece coz not in the bubble. And the laughter bit at the front is to intrigue ppl outside the bubble & make them watch

I too wanted everything to be very serious and nuanced and detailed and written and had qualms about making it simple & entertaining but Mike convinced me this is how you get people outside the circle to take notice. To want more detail. He was right. He knows how to do this.
-
Yeah, I too was worried about the video but when I think about explaining it to my wife or family off Twitter, if makes a ton of sense.
-
Mike calls it the spearhead. It introduces people to the problem and makes them want to know more. Has to be simple and sharp and accurate. He will feed them more information and he has already. We also get to direct them to our writing and talk to inquirers.
