"cis people"...sigh. why is it that when we try to cater to the sensibilities of extreme minorities we end up changing the rules for everyone else...

When talking about trans issues, we do need a word for people who aren't trans or we just get lost in confusion.
-
In the same way, the word 'heterosexual' came into existence after the word 'homosexual' was invented.
-
Was "heterosexual" also used as a stick to beat people with the privilege of not being gay into moral submission?
-
It definitely has been, yes. But words for things themselves don't do that. They're invented because people need a word to describe things that had not previously needing describing.

But do human rights actually exist?
-
Only if we make them exist.
-
That's the problem, at least for me, if they are by consensus they are not innate. So, if I decide to self-identity as Marie Antoinette's left testicle, I only have that right if it is conferred upon me by my (hopefully) cake-eating peers
-
They're not innate, no. How could they be? We have to work it out. We have only ourselves to blame or praise for the way we now treat trans people.
-
Some of them might be innate and tied to biologically instinctual behaviors of social animals. Historically, how many independently developed religions boil down to, "Don't be a dick to people unless they're outside/endangering your tribe, because fuck those guys."
-
Our moral sense is innate, yes. But we know it's not innate to give everyone human rights because we'd have done that before now.
-
We kinda did, it just lacked sophistication and we called it "religion". The Golden Rule is absolutely an expression of a human right. The rule of law is thousands of years old and exists to codify rights perceived as innate.

If some guy wants to put on a pretty dress and skip to the park, I can’t imagine why anyone would care, but that doesn’t make him a woman (especially if he still has his ding-dong).
-
Yes, that's a completely reasonable and relevant response to my essay. Thank you so much for the contribution.
-
“Reasonable and relevant”?!? I had to double check to make sure you were talking to me.

I’m not sure reclaiming the word *liberal* to use it as you do without confusing people is possible. Rational and reasonable still resonate. Great article. I’m conservative WASP yet this describes my take on trans and gay people to a great degree. Do you know of
@RyanTAnd ? -
Liberal means something different in my country than in yours, anyway. It doesn't mean left wing.

I have mixed feelings on the issue. I empathize but solutions proposed (eg for prison) seem complex. Not sure how the govt should approach this.

This is kindergarten stuff. Really.pic.twitter.com/pZJTOnfD9S

I think my essay does better at addressing the issues around it, tbh. The science of why some people are trans, how to address unique practical issues around trans identity & the ethical considerations but I agree that wouldn't interest a kindergartener.
-
I'm sure it does Helen. I look forward to reading it when I'm not in the middle of stuffing in a quick lunch.
