We've always done this in one way or another. If "He is a feminine man" makes sense to you, you too instinctively see gender as something different to biological organs. It's annoying to discuss and attempt to define sharply tho so I tend not to get into it.
The reason people won't go with a simple "well, you're wrong to feel that way so no-one needs to consider you," is a mixture of science showing the experience to be rooted in biology and liberalism wanting to let people live as they wish provided it doesn't affect anyone else.

Nothing about having coherent descriptions stops people living how they wish live. Until recently, effeminate men, or ‘gender benders’ knew they were men but lived with feminine marker etc. (Here is a nice picture of the Human League)pic.twitter.com/fpKCTMba3P
