He's very polite but he won't agree that he can know biases and agendas through probabilities and that particularly Boghossian is anti science, so we had to leave it there.

Just for the record that’s not what I’ve said. I haven’t said Boghossian is anti science and I’ve only said it is possible to identify biases and ideological agendas through applying normal skepticism/critical thinking. Ignoring all context isn’t being pure and objective.

Good. He's definitely not anti-science. You can detect his biases and ideological agendas best through reading him write about them tho or listening to him talk about them.

That’s snark. But it’s snark with a point. I don’t think Peter entirely acknowledges his biases. No one does. But different folks make more/less effort to combat them.

Your suggestion to listen to Peter’s talks to hear him identify biases sounds, to be blunt, naive. He does talk about cognitive biases but that doesn’t mean he consistently applies such insight to accurately assess his own positions/biases. Generally people are not great judges..

1/2 Listened to Sam interview a gun advocate from the NRA. He let him talk, and was sympathetic to his points. I *hate* guns, and couldn't be more unsympathetic. The guy made some good points, and some very bad points. My opinion is unchanged, but I found it a worthwhile listen.

2/2 ...because it's very rare to hear clever people from the 'other side' being able to explain their views. On average, Sam's expressed opinions put him staunchly progressive. Regardless, I can't understand what's wrong with him talking to people.

This really is a worrying development. Why can't we just say "I thought that person made a bad argument or believes a false thing or made a bad judgement about who to talk to" and then evaluate them on what their own values are?

We can... and we should. But we also shouldn’t act like networks people are involved in are entirely irrelevant. This is Rubin’s schtick and it requires wilful ignorance to ignore the blatant patterns in content.

He's not going to listen to me. He's going to go on about how I collaborate with someone who has spoken with someone who has said bad things and also possibly could be said to have the biases associated with a certain kind of classical liberal. Its like the project didn't happen.

Sigh... if you say so. I thought we were having broader discussion and it was ok to make references to things we both understand to illustrate a point. Your summary of my position reads to me as very convenient. I thought I was clear about value of the project but nevermind.
