I am so fed up with the argument "Don't address problems on the left coz it feeds the right." It isn't enough to point out the problems on the other side & call people names for voting for them. Isn't this clear yet? To get elected, the left needs to be credible & respectworthy.

It's just terrible psychology to think that acknowledging and addressing problems within your own side makes it appear less credible to the waverers who could be persuaded to vote for it. That's what makes it credible.

I’m sometimes skeptical at the existence of this near robot-like middle group that’s still undecided about whether or not they want to vote for someone who rips families apart at the border and openly incites violence at rallies

And yet you'll have noticed that the Democrats got in last time but the Republicans this time. Clearly people shifted and shifting them back is the only way to win elections and effect change. No reason to think they're robots.

If folks aren’t shifting away from Trump by this point, I’m not sure they ever will.

It's not enough to make liberal speaking points about the problems with the right. There's a need to speak to concerns that trigger conservative moral foundations and also to alleviate fears that the left is dominated by identity politics & won't address any problems with Islam.

Look at why people say they voted Trump this time when they voted Obama last time. They felt that Hillary represented an elite which didn't care about the working class, authoritarian buttons got pushed by the refugee crisis. They felt that identity politics dominated the Left.

“They felt that identity politics dominated the Left.” There’s a reason why they felt that. RW pundits & YouTube talking heads told them, & still do, over & over again. I’m a little cynical of their love bombing of you guys right now unless I see a behaviour change from them.

Everyone's first duty in criticism should be to call out their own groups and clubs before they call out anyone else. We have it completely backwards right now.

Physician, heal thyself ... is a proverb used from the time of Greek playwright Aeschylus (c. 525/524 – c. 456/455 BC). The moral of the proverb is counsel to attend to one's own defects rather than criticising defects in others. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physician,_heal_thyself …

This is the inherent problem with modern politics. No bipartisan support, no sense of common goals. Married to an ideology without any insight to any flaws it may have. Introspection leads to improvement.

Many look at it like a battle/war. If youre wasting time dithering and sparking infighting you’re giving the other, unified side a real advantage

The right isn't committed to civility or enlightenment epistemology. A demagogue came in, told a country that the world was burning, promised a solution only he could implement, sprinkled in some xenophobic fearmongering, and presto; the right secured an election.

*Hysteria* about the left being a creeping force for a marxist inspired ideology surely didn't help our chances.

There's a reason the right loves it when a leftist says or does something irrational or violent. It's great for building their "the world is crumbling and we're the only ones who can fix it" story line.

Yes, it would be great if the left was radical-free. That's what a perfect world would look like. Ideally, we would be able to "deconvert" all/most radicals into something more moderate. However, that's not going to happen anytime soon.

Do people on the left need to bring about that shift back towards the center? That seems likely, sure. However, merely highlighting and naming the radical elements doesn't seem helpful. Honestly, this strategy seems to be mostly counterproductive.

The left radicals stay radical, and the right becomes more inflamed.

A slightly different approach may be better. Firstly, highlight and name the reactionary/radical elements of the right. This establishes the threat the right presents. Secondly, promote positive and viable alternative solutions to the issues the public is concerned about.
