As someone who was until recently very afraid of public speaking, I still object to singling out women as fearful in this way and making special allowances for them. We've spent many years arguing that we can cope with the public sphere as well as men.https://twitter.com/HPluckrose/status/1053883948659544064 …

Sorry about the panic attacks and the insomnia. It used to be that public speaking was far less stressful, but now there's the risk of disagreement being manifest as physical violence instead of reason. I'd save the money on lessons and hire a bodyguard!

I was much less afraid of being attacked than I was of having a panic attack, hyperventilating and passing out coz of all the people looking at me! In the end, I was panicking about panicking & it all got so ridiculously meta that I had to go to the doctor!

That sounds awful. I have read that many people fear public speaking more than death. I'm more scared of death. Don't picture your audience naked - it is probably some form of assault. Congratulations for overcoming what is a common and serious phobia.

Helen, in addition to your intelligence and commitment to your social values, I really admire your empathy and openness about your personal experiences.

I've noticed this tendency of some people to disregard people's stress of certain circumstances, but you acknowledging the discomfort you and others may face while still advocating for personal responsibility is an important message.

Last year I started to speak at IT conferences. Since then I had four talks, and two smaller panel discussion. It's still an absolute horror for me. Being male doesn't help at all.

Wine helped you. You have always been exceptionally lucid & articulate after a glass or two. So we know at least one aid to public speaking in your case.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't have been able to tell any of this from your performance. In the videos I've seen you come across as confident and authoritative.
