As someone who was until recently very afraid of public speaking, I still object to singling out women as fearful in this way and making special allowances for them. We've spent many years arguing that we can cope with the public sphere as well as men.https://twitter.com/HPluckrose/status/1053883948659544064 …

You lot mostly don't know how afraid I was of public speaking a year ago. Well, some of you do. Poor
@christianjbdev got the worst of it and ended up having to talk me down from backing out. Well, scolding me about being ridiculous mostly.Show this thread -
And
@ConceptualJames had a go at it in his usual style which involved maths & a mercilessly logical argument. Step 1) We raise the proposition that you are not capable of doing this panel. Step 32) We find that the belief that you are not capable of doing this panel is false.Show this thread -
And
@PeterBoghossian provided support by having me talk at him over Skype and texting me "You are awesome! You got this!" at regular intervals. And@IonaItalia offered sympathy & offered to lend me her personality which loves public speaking if we could figure out how.Show this thread -
And I STILL had to go to doctor due to panic attacks & insomnia and get short-term medication and I STILL say that we shouldn't coddle people but encourage them to push through it or not and we especially shouldn't coddle by gender & define women as fearful in this way.

You are smart, you are able to put together cogent arguments. You are an individual that has your own ideas and concepts as to how a society can function. You need nothing else. Blaze on.

After having said repeatedly that I am a writer and not a speaker and that I simply can't do public speaking, I did it several times and discovered I'm actually quite good at it. Also, thank you!

The human mind is plastic. You truly can do anything you want. It just takes time and effort. Strong work, Helen.

I strongly agree. Terrified of it, but have to do presentations etc for uni. Am finding being pushed into it is hugely boosting confidence. Conversely, am close to people who are avoidant and seems to escalate into more serious forms of social withdrawal if enabled/coddled.
