I must admit that most philosophy goes right over my head, and that perhaps part of my problem with any exchange about post-modernism is that no one can agree on what it is in the first place. The definition of post-modernism becomes about as vague as post-modern texts.

This is an unfair reading. He’s missing almost all of the nuances of Hicks’ arguments + not factoring in how a historian of ideas looks at the evolution of thought. There are some overgeneralizations. But postmodernism is a rhetorical stratagem, not an argument. A closed circle.

... Some of his own claims. Foucault became an individualist only really in his later phase. Like lost of those authors they are actually better referred to a poststructuralist, and they largely embrace a structuralist ontology but make it indeterminate determinism.

Was he fair? Probably not. This whole intellectual terrain is subject to multiple interpretations. Hicks book should be judged on its own terms. It's not a close exposition of individual authors, but about the trend. Some simplification is necessary. Also, he's arguing about...
