My Twitter app crashed, didn't let me send a load of tweets and now wont let me see the ones I answered. I'd said that 'shutting down' is the wrong way to see the aim to marginalise bad ideas. That doesn't work. Beating them with better ones does.

I realise this is unsatisfactory for people who seem to want to have a 3 step plan for stopping terrible SocJus scholarship & activism but truly changing people's minds is the only way to do that. Getting them to see the problem & inspiring them to support reason & consistency.

This is a fairly logical approach. Kudos to you by the way, you have restored some of my faith in the social sciences. You even remind me of Feynman with the way you approach the present state of a topic.

I agree that banning is not an adequate response in this case. But, we can make a case playing devil's advocate.... Let's go back and remember one of the main reasons why Universities exist and why they extend certificates and degrees in the first place.

A medic or an engineer can't use such a title unless the claim is backed up by a third party that guarantees that after careful examination you meet minimum requirements to hold that title. You are a professional, an expert on a field.

Now if a third party becomes corrupt and starts giving carelessly medical or engineering titles what happens? Easy, people die for medical negligence, buildings fall in the case of structural engineers. etc

We wound not be forgiving with a University giving up methodological rigor when human life is at stake. Now, you may claim that women and gender studies are harmless disciplines that can't possibly produce such catastrophic results.

But aren't those fields influencing public policies and other fields? Aren't they the ones that got one of the leading transsexual researchers fired because science collided with their ideology?

So, I still think that banning is still not the solution here but even a libertarian will agree that selling degrees that have no methodological rigor without an explicit warning has a name: Fraud.

If anything I find that the level of abstract ideas needs to be constrained. Only empirical evidence should alter that boundary.

Good luck with that! SocJus is a perfectly hermetic (in both senses) Weltanschuuang. I prefer the pointing-and-laughing strategy -- it won't work either, but at least I can enjoy it.
