A strange thing keeps happening. Me: We need to make gender studies rigorous, evidence-based & strive for objectivity and universities open to ideological diversity! 100 people: You're wrong because that isn't how they are! They're the opposite!

Cancer is a straightforward bad and everyone who sees it this way and cares about it sees the same solution - to cure it. With things like grievance studies, feminism & religion, people who see a serious problem with them are divided on the solution - fix it or ban it.

Those who want to fix a problem within scholarship/activism/a religion are very likely to be perceived by those who want to ban the scholarship/activism/religion or at least condemn it utterly as having failed to understand the seriousness of the problem.

Therefore, they are likely to respond to "There is a serious problem happening right now that we must fix" with "No, because its a serious problem and happening right now. Let me explain the problem to you and how serious it is." Recognising this helps cut through the disconnect

The "evidence based gender studies" sounds more like "We need to find good kinds of cancer to be kept around. We don't want to be too hasty with this curing thing."

More charged topics invite more preconception-driven responses? And then there's the whole "My Bick Is Dig"/"You Wrong That Read" mug phenomenon; mental autocomplete if you like.

I was a bit disgruntled this year when my org adopted a Grade 5 reading comprehension level policy for all communications. My audience includes Ph.Ds! I can't do that! ...yeah, they were right, I was wrong. It works better.

Cancer analogy needs work. People have not had to fight for decades against institutional power and a political elite insisting that cancer does not exist. Decades of lies is why they are skeptical of someone taking a middle position and saying cancer exists and can be cured.

We should all get off Twitter.

Nooooooooo! Please dont get off twitter! I've unearthed so many mind treasures from reading y'all. For people who WANT to learn but can't afford to pay for it, this is a great way to get exposed to alternate ideas.

Try youtube.

You dont know what to look for if you don't know who to look for. I'd never heard of pinker or haidt before twitter. If you want out of the echo chamber you need to expose yourself to other ideas. The best way to do that is to expose yourself to other tribes of thought.
