I wonder if the response would have been different if the mother were Irish. Many Irish names are incomprehensible, even to the British.https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1053054861053489152 …

A name "that sounds beautiful in a foreign language can be grating in English," Dear Abby wrote. Now the column — and the heated response to it — has sparked a fresh debate about identity, acceptance and inclusion. https://nyti.ms/2yLxSbs

If your name is Niamh, we *will* say call you "Neeyamhuh" or spell it "Neeve" depending on how we encounter it first.

My daughter's name is "Thalia" - the grace of good humour. The Th is Attic Greek, so it is "T" like Thomas - Talia. We knew people would mispronounce and misspell her name - her surname is Swedish and was never going to be properly spelled, so we just went with it.

Thank you, it was a name with intention - we (Gen Xers) wanted our daughter to bring joy to people but we knew from Drop the Dead Donkey NOT to call a child after an attribute also all of the Charity; Chastity; Joy and Hope's I ever met tried especially hard NOT to be their name!
