So if we get evidence to play a larger role in society, eventually the Universities will change their tune according to that. Something like that? Because that seems credible to me, I don't think there's an easy quick-fix to this without doing a lot of damage.

Yes, and quite fast too. Look how much things have changed in universities in fields which study gender, race and sexuality since the 50s.

I would tentatively add that I do feel the beginnings of a backlash to this from the student side. I see applied postmodernism more as a fashion than any kind of coherent intellectual position. Fashions change.

Do you see any problems with that as universities remain overly subsidized and a requirement for students who want a middle class income? Which is to say consumers who value the degree but consider the fields of study relatively interchangeable.

Isn't this a problem if the are primarily funded by Government which, to avoid the charge of politicising academia, exerts no influence? Where did the meaningful pressure for change come from?
