I really don't need to be responding to "Actually, it's all Marxism/capitalism/neoliberalism/the illuminate" with a long tweet thread about what it actually is when I could just require them to make their case longform with evidence & a reasoned argument before I address it.

I currently have one person who possibly could - can some of Marcuse be manifesting via black feminism - and if so, I will benefit from reading it all set out and two people who I'm pretty sure could not - all power structures are Marxism & gender theory is all based on 1 doctor.

As an advice columnist who gets a lot of reader mail, I would suggest that you have an, um, optimistic view about possible length and level of readability -- though I do think it could deter quite a few from huff-tweeting.
-
Well, if an unreadable essay comes through, I will have to say it's unreadable.

I think this is the wrong approach.

I think it will save me much time responding to 'Actually gender theory is all based on one scientist who did surgery on one child' by explaining the sources of gender theory if I ask them to research it, prove it & send it to me.

Oh. pfffft. Damn vulcan literalists. I had a sarcastic face emoji. An emoji, dammit!

Tell them you'll only read essays that have already been through peer review

Ignorant people try to correct my knowledge of law often. It doesn't bother me - it's twitter, they're twits and ultimately nothing they say (or I say) matters for the most part. I'd ignore them - don't feed their ego by making them feel relevant.

I can’t comprehend why someone wouldn’t do that from the start. Always punch holes through your own argument first. Gah.

Just go Socratic on them: “Oh? Why do you think that?” Shouldn’t take long for them to realize that they haven’t really thought things through.

Often times the reason stems from ignorance, for example as a child I thought it was wrong for firefighters to drive the truck to the grocery store to go shopping 1/x
-
Why werent they doing it on their own time in their own cars, why wanst the truck at the fire house in case there was a fire? 2/x
-
It wanst until someone bothered to inform me that the firefighters shopping were on duty &they needed to take the truck with them so they could go straight to a fire rather than drive back to house to then goto the fire that I understood it wasnt a waste of resources or greed 3/x
-
when criticizing someones thought or idea, I try to start with "the problem as I see it" and try to highlight the reasons I think someone/thing is mistaken 4/x
-
Personally I am always delighted when someone points out data that I never has access to that explains why things are set up or laid out the way they are 5/x
-
On the other had dealing with ideologues of any stripe is an exercise in futility, so when it comes to them I devolve to mocking & highlighting their hypocrisy, 6/x
-
I once got a christian so worked up over the course of a few hours they said free will isnt real and god is not all powerful, fun day, but not very productive 7/7
