I think there’s some truth that men have some sort of evolution-based desire/need/expectation to be a provider and a protector. When I was married and raising kids I was usually the one who would fetch things or build things or fix things. I felt fulfilled by it.

Similarly, I also felt I was a protector. e.g., once on vacation with my wife, in the middle of the night the hotel room door rattled loudly as if someone was forcing their way in. Before I even knew it I was at the door, heart racing, in fight/protect mode. It was instinctive.

For me, watching who was around us in a parking lot, evaluating the person coming the other way on a sidewalk, or checking the back seat of the car before getting in, was just what one did; normal instinctive situational awareness. Not unusual, unfair, or oppressive.

Wary and alert is right, just as ANY other species that has survived evolution until now naturally instinctively, subconsciously, automatically, is.
-
Now, after all these millions of years of natural selection hard wiring this into our psyches, to suddenly characterize this as somehow unfair or oppressive strikes me as very much a first world problem, and the latest play in the game of victimhood sweepstakes.

"Situational awareness", in prepper-speak.

Not just prepper-speak. There is a similar idea in combative arts and the military. It's part of the reason you run drills and scenarios.

I am alert to the fact I am wary of saying afraid now at least. Thank you. Ha

I have more than once had to manoeuvre out of what I thought was a really dangerous situation with a woman who was oblivious the whole time.

I think there is less fear for men, but they are far less complacent than women sometimes assume.
