I'd actually be very interested in info on this. It might be true that men are more prone to seek women's time and space than other men's but I strongly suspect they are not nearly as prone to this as women are. I have ranted about this frequently. Insufficient data at this time. But I do think that (generalising mightily) men seem to feel entitled to encroach in a variety of ways on a woman’s personal time and space in ways they wouldn’t dream of doing with another man (and women wouldn’t dream of doing with a man).

I have pointed out to my husband that it's always me who is expected to be sociable while he is able to dogwalk, go the shops, pick up the child from school & not be expected to walk in step with or make small talk with anyone. He has pointed out that he would actually like that.

I was even the subject of an intervention from mothers at the school because I declined to join those who walked their dogs after school drop-off & went alone. Them: "You're getting a reputation for being unsociable. Why won't you walk with us?" Me: "Because I'm unsociable."

I know this is a slightly different thing to men making unwanted small talk with women of an irritating kind like "Smile! It may never happen." But I think if we're going to claim men encroach on women's space & time coz of some sense of entitlement, it merits being brought up.

2/2 What's unacceptable to some is perfectly fine by me, so I get annoyed when other women try to lay down rules and say thou shalt not. They don't represent me. /endminirant

Yes, and it seems all people are going on is subjective feelings + corroboration from friends who all see life through the same subjective lens. My own subjective feeling is: humans do this. Some do it more. What's acceptable varies between cultures & between individuals. 1/2

I'm not going to downplay the smile thing from men, because I could see where that would make somebody very uncomfortable. But, the ongoing pressure from other women to be sociable would wear me out if I was a woman.

Men are expected to be the ones who initiate contact, start a conversation, ask the woman out.

There’s a massive underestimation of how much of unwanted male behavior is driven by what’s required to gain female interest, and that most men are undesirable to most women which inevitably results in this type of conflict.

Of course this isn’t at all to say harassment is justified, and we need clear lines of what is acceptable and what isn’t. But simply that barring a 180 degree shift in dynamics of how men can attract women, these situations will continue to arise.

Always difficult to know if the small talk is intrusive or not, but as soon as it becomes clear it is, then withdraw gracefully and immediately, regardless of gender. Also, any chump that uses a variant of the ‘smile’ line should assume a friendly Glasgow kiss in reply!

I think this is more tied to personality type and traits than anything else. And maybe there's a gender imbalance in these personality traits. But still, that we talk about gender and not personality here I think is a huge mistake, and serves to reinforce gender bias and norms.
