I have pointed out to my husband that it's always me who is expected to be sociable while he is able to dogwalk, go the shops, pick up the child from school & not be expected to walk in step with or make small talk with anyone. He has pointed out that he would actually like that.

I was even the subject of an intervention from mothers at the school because I declined to join those who walked their dogs after school drop-off & went alone. Them: "You're getting a reputation for being unsociable. Why won't you walk with us?" Me: "Because I'm unsociable."

I know this is a slightly different thing to men making unwanted small talk with women of an irritating kind like "Smile! It may never happen." But I think if we're going to claim men encroach on women's space & time coz of some sense of entitlement, it merits being brought up.

We are social animals and I think it’s a category error to classify it as “encroaching” on “personal space” when, except for actual pests, it’s just being social. In one way it’s akin to straw manning another persons intentions.

In my experience what differs is how the "annoyed" evaluates and takes it. It happens (a lot) from women towards men&boys but theyre less likely to take it seriously or actually feel bothered by it whereas women apparently tend to think its symptom of entitlement where men dont.
