I think a lot of it is just guys lacking social awareness. It's like in retail when ~every time something doesn't scan right away, the customer comes up with the brilliant 'joke' "OH I GUESS THAT MEANS IT'S FREE LOL HAHA" and they have no idea how many times you've heard it.

I think it's a good idea to let men know this "you should smile" line is untactful to use but it's weird to see people making a big deal out of it.

hate it when people make a big deal out of issues like this. I get why someone telling you "smile more" would be annoying. But that's just it: It's an annoyance. To make that part of a "the patriarchy is oppressing us" narrative seems silly.
