This is a thing that really worries me about the woman-as-victim narrative. A few really lovely men on here have said to me that they didn't realise women lived their lives so afraid and it has really made them think. I don't think my friends and I are unique in not being afraid.https://twitter.com/HPluckrose/status/1050211859306041346 …

It was very clear that the ones in Portland were conscious that they could be seen as a threat and wanted to signal their safety & decrease any anxiety I might be feeling. This seems to be a cultural thing. Men in London just keep walking to their destination at the same pace.

Although I should say I was walking by the university campus so most of the men I passed were undergraduates and that could make a difference. I meant to tweet about it at the time.

Good to hear that they were so kind and thoughtful. Was it worthwhile : did you feel less anxious?
-
I don't tend to feel anxious, tbh. It was sweet of them tho.
-
Glad to hear it. Maybe you're not the anxious type, but many people are, and made more so by news and politically driven narratives. For women like that, those men may be doing a bigger favour. If they keep doing it, they must be getting positive feedback from some.
-
I don't see a problem with it at all. I just wouldn't like men to think women live in a constant state of fear because I don't think that is true.
-
Very glad to hear it. But maybe some do, which is I guess their point.

I defenitly do this. I’m usually a fast walker, but if I’m coming up behind someone late at night, especially a woman, I slow down and/or wait for them to make a different turn, I’ve had it before where I’m pretty sure people thought I was creeping up on ‘em

The US has more violent crime than the UK in general but we have WAY more anxiety about it than we have actual crime at this point.

I do it. Wait for the next elevator, go the long way around a store. No one wants to make anybody uncomfortable. I also have a big beard and a resting bitch face so normally I attribute it to that.

It's because we've been told time & again how scared women are of us & being assaulted. So we try to relieve the anxiety we're taught that all of you have.
