OK, well that is where our fundamental disagreement lies. You think the arguments of our papers were actually sound and we wanted to show that people genuinely think this. I am unlikely to convince you to change your epistemology & ethics so we can leave it here.https://twitter.com/willwilkinson/status/1050074682588848129 …

I don't think they're sound. In my own field, philosophy, we constantly talk about whether physical objects are real, whether time is an illusion, whether a down-to-the-atom replica of a person can lack consciousness. Before you can do science, you have to throw ideas around.

You seem to be implying that tossing around hypotheses and exploring their contours before leaping right into an empirical test is an illegitimate enterprise for serious scholars. I vehemently disagree.

One of my heroes, Peirce, noted that the hardest and most valuable part of science, creative hypothesis generation, is the least like "science." It's imaginative, playful. There's a division of labor in inquiry, and poets are better at some of it than hard-science technicians.

I don't know where you are going now but this is why I dislike these conversations. They meander and jump from one thing to another and nothing ever resolved or even properly understood.

Thank you. Feel free to consider me intellectually sloppy & I could think of you as obscurantist and slippery but the fact is that we are talking in different languages and conceptions & will not agree. We can try again another time to speak plainly and be charitable.

I admit that I was irritable and not extending much charity myself.
