I actually think they should all be seriously engaged. It may seem obvious that some ideas are completely untethered from reality and contrary to mountains of evidence but as they haven't gone away, it is clear that this is not obvious to everyone & we need to continue to engage.https://twitter.com/jblarson/status/1050052863676882946 …

Should flat earthers be seriously engaged? Should intelligent design proponents? No. You're dealing with the same "quality" of thought here. Grievance studies proponents are making the world worse, not better. Less intelligent, not more intelligent.

We seem to have conclusively beaten some bad ideas. There is little need to argue against the idea of wandering wombs or phrenology or alchemy or changelings who steal babies. Others continue to find support and so we must not lose the ability to argue against them.

Yes they should be engaged, 100%! Why? Experience shows us that when an idea is NOT engaged - and instead suppressed - it does not go away, it FESTERS. In the dark, in silence, its proponents growing ever more vicious until they explode on someone. Sometimes literally.

This is what worries me. You'd think everyone would just know Earth isn't flat (for example), because it seems like such a ludicrous idea now, but leaving them unchecked means that incorrect notion will live and have a chance to spread to other vulnerable people.

Exactly. Thing is, much of the "continuing conversation" lives at the edges - you'll never convince the true believers, but you CAN stop an idea from spreading to those who might otherwise grab onto it. And this just takes time, no two ways about it.

With respect this is not just ideas, this has rapidly become mainstream thought that has negatively impacted upon law and society. It doesn't need engagement, it needs to be swiftly identified for the nonsense it is and eradicated from the root.

Faith is belief built by inspiration, revelation or authority. Beliefs based on proof/evidence are another side of the spectrum. Faith is belief often held in spite of or against evidence, like flatearthers and can't be reasoned. Faith, however, makes us human and we need faith

There's a fun YouTube channel that constantly debunks the Moon Landing Hoax channels. Honestly I think it is healthy to have a proper "trial" with both sides able to put forward their arguments. That is why I am against most censorship.
