Why is calling for you to be fired against your free speech/ free association? Are you entitled to your job?
-
-
-
No, but you should be able to express your opinion without fear of punishment. Being fired from a job is punishment.
-
So too would be disassociating with me. Do you have to be my friend if I say racist (or pick your poison) things?
-
No, you can be friends (or not) with whoever you want and you don’t have to justify it.
-
But I’m punishing them for their speech no?
-
You don’t become friends with someone as a reward, nor leave them as a punishment. (If you do, it’s not really a friendship) Friendship is a connection and if that connection breaks, it just breaks.
-
Okay, just disassociation then. We would spend time together do things blah blah blah. Then I say something you find gross and disassociate with me. Fear of others doing this to me dissuades me from speaking out in future.
-
Sure, and presumably you’d find new friend that share (or at least accept) your views. Nobody has a right to be liked, irrespective of free speech. We can only ask that people not be restrained in their activities on the basis on them expressing their views.

GamerGate is really one of the only things that Cathy Young got totally wrong IMO—in fact I don't even remember reading her article(s), but I assume they're wrong because they weren't anti-GG (or so I was told)!

It really depends on the intention behind saying so (and the result). If the purpose is to impose a cost on someone to change future behavior, then it's reasonably construed as a punishment. Always be suspicious of people wanting to draw clear-cut boundaries on this issue.
