It was clearly unacceptable when powerful organisations which offer people opportunities for career advancement were men-only but I couldn't support aims to ban Working Men's Clubs where men mostly drank beer & played darts. I wouldn't for women-only social clubs either.

I have a small circle of female friends connected to a larger circle of them & when we get together, there is an unwritten rule that no-one brings her husband or boyfriend. There are different manners, different topics of conversation, a different atmosphere with mixed groups.

I know men have the same thing. It doesn't come down to 'Men/women are X bad thing or Y good thing' & wanting to only socialise in same sex groups is probably not healthy. It's just a different set of connections, with different social rules & different conversations.

One of my concerns with the Boy Scouts going coed was that, at a certain age, cliques tend to form around girls, and Scouts could just become an extension of school (socially). There's something to be said for having an escape from those pressures.

Yeah that’s a lot of it. Certainly when I was a kid I just wanted a time out from all those hormones.
