You got right to the heart of it here. Selling out on Epistemology is a great way to word it. Also, Lawrence, can you tell me when we will have enough cause to raise awareness? My lefty friends work very hard to ignore all the ongoing issues.

You should argue your hearts out, but not by overly relying on the creation of meme ready loaded language like "social justice warriors." I suggest being careful about falling into the trap of doing the same thing you accuse your ideological foes of doing. Cheers

If you are simply advocating against tribalism and overly simplistic arguments, I suspect we are all with you.

Agreed. but here is my thing with what Lawrence is doing here. He knows there is an identifiable group that does these things. He admits as much but completely side steps when exactly we can note there is an issue. How many university melt-downs are enough?

He'd prefer us to be right-wing anti-sjw nuts because they are much more easy to handle than liberal lefties who still value reason, evidence, rigour and a consistency of liberal principles of universality and individuality for tackling social justice issues.

It's odd some of the people I am "closest" to when it comes to liberal tolerance manage to be the first people to box me in with near polar ideological opposites. Happens on Facebook all the time. I can literally argue for gay rights, and be called homophobic. It's unreal.

Lawrence, why do you fight climate change skepticism even when a rather small fraction of scholars are climate change skeptics?

I'm more concerned with politicians and fossil fuel lobbyists who wield real political power and publuv influence while rejecting established science.

As you should be. Others are concerned with institutions of tremendous cultural power controlling a certain narrative on progressing toward a more fair and liberal future while denying science.

I share that concern, as do many other academics, which is why it is not helpful to paint universities as hotbeds of intolerance based on a few high profile cases. It is a good way to divide rather than engage with those who agree as well as those who disagree.

I was penalised for saying sexual selection is real & racism is best overcome by focusing on commonalities. 90% of UK universities censor some words to do with marginalised groups. Censoring & no-platforming are common, as are protests of liberals and feminists.

I feel sure you'd see the problem if universities were predominantly conservative & censored words which countered their worldview and every week saw another case of someone being fired or vilified for disagreement. It matters. Why do you think Heterodox Academy exists?
