This is the only point I am making here. If I think I am right, I think I have reasoned correctly. Therefore I think people who are wrong have reasoned incorrectly. If they make me realise I have reasoned incorrectly, I revise my reasoning accordingly & we no longer disagree.https://twitter.com/rjheathfield/status/1004649091735924736 …

This is the principle to aim for anyway. It's not a claim that changing minds is easy or that people don't search for ways to still be right despite being shown a problem with their reasoning.https://areomagazine.com/2017/12/08/the-problem-with-truth-and-reason-in-a-post-truth-society/ …

Nor is it a claim that people cannot be perfectly reasonable while starting from wrong premises. If thunder really were an indication of an angry god, perfectly reasoned arguments could be made about how to placate it.

I just don't think it's reasonable to be suspicious if someone cannot include reasonable arguments they disagree with in their position. Try not to disagree with with reasonable arguments. It means your disagreement is not a reasoned one.

Absolutely do steelman the argument you don't think works and be charitable about the intentions of the other person and consider them a generally reasonable person when they are.
