I'm a liberal, and not a "classical liberal" (i.e. a libertarian) but a real liberal social democratic Krugman fan, and I defend Sam Harris. See also @GodDoesnt, @HPluckrose, @IonaItalia, etc...
What is Charles Murray's position on IQ and genetics? Did you listen to it?

As I've said before, I don't think Murray is an honest actor in this. He plays motte-and-baily depending on the audience. But the position he put in the Harris podcast was mostly the defensible one he uses in "polite company". Is that the motte or the bailey? I can never remember
-
I was also rendered suspicious by his lacklustre answer to 'Why study this? What would it achieve?'
-
Yep. Sam asked the right question. But he refused to go in for the kill after that answer. That's the new "good host"
@SamHarrisOrg. I prefer the old "terrier" Sam who would happily ruin a podcast or a show or an interview to get at a bad point. - 1 more reply

Yeah, feel free to read the 4000 tweets on this thread about that.
-
And you think there's something to criticise about the view that there's no evidence genetics cause IQ differences and individuality and not race matters?
-
What? That is the exact position I'm arguing: there is no evidence that genetics - rather than environmental factors - explains the gap. Charles Murray and Harris defending him hold the position that genetics explains the gap.
-
Show me. In the interview he says that genetics has not been established as the cause of repeated data showing difference and argues that individuality matters more than race citing Obama as an example of why racist stereotyping re intelligence doesn't work.
-
"We’re not talking about another 20 years before the purely environmental position is discredited, but probably less than a decade." Talking about the gap. http://www.aei.org/publication/bell-curve-20-years-later-qa-charles-murray/ … Charles Murray believes black people are, on average, genetically inferior to white people.
-
Interesting. Not what is said in the podcast. Nevertheless, do you think this shld never be discussed? What if IQ does vary by race/ethnicity with Asians & Jews at the top, whites in the middle & Africans at the bottom? Tells us nothing about any individual. Shld it be forbidden?
-
Charles Murray has built his entire career on this. It is being discussed. Lots of people study this constantly, which is how we know about the Flynn effect and such. We can deal with that issue when and if it is proven.
-
Nah. It's one chapter of his book and after including race in his exploration of IQ, he was persona non grata everywhere.
